Because life is too short to have boring hair …

Direct from Paris, Milan and straight to Sydney, the latest hair trends landing in Australia this Winter will have you reaching for your Prada trench and loafers and e-biking into Koda Bondi faster than you can finish this blog.

As the seasons change and the days get chillier, Koda’s top stylist Diane Giorgevski says, “It’s the perfect time to overhaul your look with a fashion forward hair style or bold new colour.” And 2023 doesn’t disappoint with its hair trends. From wispy bangs to pixie cuts, here’s our favourite winter hair trends plus tips on how to maintain your hair in the cooler months.

Winter Hair Trend # 1 The Classic Bob

What’s not to love about the classic bob? It’s chic, short, makes regular comebacks on the runways, can be textured or sleek, and is relatively easy to maintain.

Thanks to Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega it’s the number one googled haircut this year. But it’s never really been out of fashion thanks to Anna Wintour. Vogue’s Queen of fashion rocks a mid-length bob and hasn’t deviated from this striking look since the 80’s. Anna famously said she’s too lazy to change it.

This is why Koda loves the classic bob;

  • It’s age defying
  • It’s easy to maintain once you know how
  • It can be short or mid-length

Who suits the classic bob?

Anna Wintour’s bob is cut perfectly to frame her face, and this is why Sydney’s top hairdressers are loving the bob’s comeback, cut at the right length it suits any face shape.

KODA recommends;

  • A shorter bob for a heart shaped face,
  • A mid-length bob for square shaped faces, add the drama with flicked ends
  • Textured bobs suit wavy, thick hair
  • Sleek bobs suit straight hair

How to maintain the classic bob

  1. Make 6 week appointments with your stylist for the short bob to maintain length
  2. For mid-length bobs you can wait slightly longer between cuts, you’ll end up with a lob (long bob) if you leave it a few months
  3. Short hair becomes oilier faster, for thinner hair you’ll need to wash almost daily so use a nourishing shampoo, if your hair is thicker washing twice a week with your normal shampoo is perfect
  4. Style your straight and sleek bob with anti-humidity products to prevent flyaways
  5. Style your textured bob with a volumising product

Kourtney Kardashian Barker, Taylor Swift, Jenna Ortega, Zendaya, Emily Ratajkowski

Winter Hair Trend # 2 The Pixie Cut

The pixie cut isn’t for those who prefer to blend in with the scenery like wallflowers. If you’re all about the drama and making a statement, this style is screaming your name.

It’s been a statement style since the 1950’s when Audrey Hepburn adopted the short back and sides cut. Since then it’s evolved and now in 2023 it’s hit the runway in many forms, including long, curly and dead straight. If you want to highlight your facial features and show off your ears, you’ll love the pixie cut.

This is why KODA loves the pixie cut;

  • Short hair can feel liberating
  • It can work on all hair types and face shapes
  • It’s incredibly versatile, you can style this cut in many ways
  • You will shave hours off washing, blow drying and styling your hair
  • It suits many hair colours, including the bold colours trending in 2023

Who suits the pixie cut?

You only have to google pixie cut images to see just how many celebrities love this hair style, it really does suit most women with no age barrier, perhaps one of the reasons it’s 2023’s biggest beauty trend.

Here’s a list of pixie cut styles you can choose from;

  • The classic; it’s chopped short all over, the length varying up to 3 inches
  • Layered; this adds volume to short hair and gives you styling options
  • Extremely short; it’s chic, easy to style and requires little maintenance
  • Bangs; adding a fringe to the pixie cut is uber chic

How to maintain the pixie cut

  1. Lock in regular cuts to maintain the best shape, we recommend every 4 to 5 weeks
  2. Stick to products that control frizz plus add definition and texture
  3. Don’t over do the products, consult your stylist about the right product for your style
  4. Brief your stylist before the big chop so you know exactly what you’ll need to do to maintain the look you’re after

Winter Hair Trend # 3 Wispy Bangs

Wispy bangs are soft, sexy and give an effortless edge to long or short layered hair. Grazing the lashes, they frame the face beautifully, hide foreheads that prefer to remain hidden and always look chic and on-trend. In 2023 wispy bangs are one of the most popular hairstyles for women and we understand why.

This is why KODA loves wispy bangs;

  • They’re ooze a chic 70’s vibe
  • You can cut a length to specifically suit your face shape and features
  • They help to break down a strong or pointed jawline
  • They give depth and add thickness to thin hair

Who suits wispy bangs?

There are so many different types of wispy bangs, you just need to find the right style to suit your face.

KODA recommends;

  • Heart Shape; try long and side swept
  • Oval Shape; literally suits all types of wispy bangs so best to try a few lengths and styles before settling on your favourite
  • Round face; try bangs that curve from ear to ear, the longest bangs will sit beautifully on your cheekbones
  • Long face; longer wispy bangs with a middle part

How to maintain wispy bangs

  1. For straight or wavy hair, use your fingers to separate the bangs and go back and forth with a blow drye
  2. To keep them looking smooth after blow drying, dry with cold air before you finish
  3. Shorter bangs needs to be cut every 3 to 4 weeks, longer curtain bangs every 6 to 8 weeks
  4. Invest in a good round brush to add volume when blow drying

Reese Witherspoon, Dakota Johnson, Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid, Zooey Deschanel

Winter Hair Trend # 4 Bold Colours

Juicy, vibrant and glossy, and no we are not talking about summer fruits but the hottest hues for hair this winter. Vibrant manic reds, bold and blustery blues, Hailey Beiber ash browns and strong strokes of balayage. These are the hair colours dominating the fashion world in 2023. And there’s no reason why you can’t adopt them too.

This is why KODA loves bold hair colours;

  • They’re fun and can completely change your vibe
  • You can play with colours, it feels like being back at kindy
  • They’re not permanent
  • You can blend in or choose to stand out

Who suits a bold colour?

ANYBODY. That’s the beauty of colour, if you’ve got the right stylist, who knows what will work for you, you can choose any colour you like, channel the kid in a candy shop.

KODA recommends;

  • If you adopt an all black winter wardrobe, try the new buttercream blonde
  • If you’re ready to embrace Winter and leave Bondi beach behind may we suggest the ash light brown
  • If you prefer to play in Winter, ask for brunette with a slight tinge of red
  • Pastel and pearl white, just because they’re two of 2023 hottest hair colours so you can

How to care for coloured hair (bold or not)

  1. Always wait a few days after treatment before your first wash, it helps the colour settle
  2. Avoid washing your hair too often, it strips the colour
  3. Use only products recommended by your hairdresser, you don’t want to ruin your bold new look
  4. Use a weekly hair mask or treatment to nourish and moisturise
  5. We know it’s cold but avoid steaming hot water when you wash your hair

Lizzie Lizzo, Zendaya, Jlo, Lily James, Kim Kardashian

Winter Hair Trend # 5 Long Layers

Long layers are just glamorous, that is all. Glamorous and cool at the same time with the added bonus of adding volume, length and texture to just about any hair style (except the pixie cut). Whether you’ve got thin wispy hair, or thick and textured hair, your stylist can work with long layers and so can you.

This is why KODA loves long layers;

  • They’re just so versatile
  • Layers suit all face shapes and women of all ages
  • They’re always in fashion, just more so in 2023
  • With a good salon cut, they’re easy to style at home

Who suits long layers?

Long layers used to be reserved for women in their 20’s and 30’s, but now it’s cool to rock them at any age. Think Elle McPherson, she’s never wavered from her long layers, taking them summer to winter with effortless chic.

KODA recommends;

  • Round face; ask for more layers, they can lengthen your shape
  • Thin hair; more layers will give you the illusion of thicker may
  • Thick hair; you won’t need as many layers
  • Add height with shorter layered hair

How to maintain long layers

  1. Invest in a good brush set to help you style your layers smoothly
  2. It’s tempting to brush your long layers regularly, but over brushing can break your hair follicles
  3. Invest in the right shampoo and conditioner for optimum health
  4. Only wash your hair once or twice a week if possible to protect your scalp and natural oils. Check out our top maintenance tips for Winter below.
